Above the Timberline

(Bobby Plough, "Barn Full Of Memories")
Above the Timberline
By Robert Joseph Plough © 2007

She cupped her hands above her eyes
To shield them from the sun
She says “Daddy look!” there she is
Quick hurry, before she runs

He looks up from his daily chores
But he knows just what he’ll find
She’s always going on about some horse
Up above the timberline

She says someday she’ll ride up there
And she’ll prove that they’re all wrong
There really is a spotted mare
And she’s free, proud, and strong

If you believe in spirit
And you believe in love
Then you gotta believe in a young girl’s dreams
And a horse sent from above

There’s a story of an Indian maid
That the old folks like to tell
She loved all horses wild or tame
You know she treated them so well

One day came a stampede
Of the horse and buffalo
She was in the way on that fateful day
And the spirits claimed her soul

Now the spirit of this Indian maid
Lives on in a spotted mare
And if you look real close above the timberline
You’ll see her way up there

If you believe in spirit
And you believe in love
Then you gotta believe in a young girl’s dreams
And a horse sent from above

The years went by and the girl grew up
To the horses she did tend
She shared a special bond with them
Her love would never end

One day she did ride out
Up the mountain they did climb
The trails were rough and they got lost
Up above the timberline

In a clearing around a corner
They saw her standing there
Her eyes bid them to follow
She led them safely out of there

If you believe in spirit
And you believe in love
Then you gotta believe in a young girl’s dreams
And a horse sent from above
