Lucky Just to Play the Game

Lucky Just to Play the Game

You played the game so well so often
I sometimes think you wrote the rules
But you met your match in a handsome cowboy’s lies
He stole your heart and made you feel a fool

It hit you hard you never saw it coming
No gentle hand to let you down
You’ve got to learn to fall before you fly
The lesson learned brought you to the ground

Every game’s got to have a winner
Most are lucky just to play the game
For you the winning came too easy
Now you’re all alone with just yourself to blame

Reflecting on your current situation
How’d things ever go so wrong
You lost control when you finally opened up your heart
Unguarded feelings just aren’t that strong

Now you’re putting on your makeup
A touch of color hides the shades of gray
But you can’t hide the way you’ve lived these forty years
It’s just the price you’re gonna have to pay

Every game’s got to have a winner
Most are lucky just to play the game
For you the winning came too easy
Now you’re all alone with just yourself to blame

The doorbell rings with anticipation
From the young man standing at the door
But you make him wait like you’ve done so many times before
Anticipation makes him want you more

You played the game so well, so often
I sometimes think you wrote the rules
But you met your match in a handsome cowboy’s lies
He stole your heart and made you feel a fool

Hope you remember the way he made you feel
When you take the heart of another fool
You’ll remember the way he made you feel
Cause foolish hearts make a game of love
